With Courage

I’ve been playing with the DADGAD open tuning for an improv piece I played last week at a panel discussion on the spiritual dimension of human relationship and trustbuilding. Particularly on what we, as individuals, draw on when we are challenged in our family, work and other relationships. It was a rad discussion, mostly focusing around the idea of authenticity and integrity. As I played, the tune kind of found me more than I made it. I tried to distill it and recorded the idea the next day.

Junction Draft 2011 Lyrics

Verse 1
———
Lets start it off with the champion of all
Laurel Luddites stepped up to the call
On the back Of Mr. Hillis he went ahead and thrilled us
And with his dog tag he now can stand tall.

Runner-up was the people’s man Quags,
Living in truckstops in nothing but rags.
He barely beat Ol Toothless, actually was quite ruthless
Cause the commish always seems to lose bad.

After that its the usual suspects,
Angry Quakers failing to take all our checks.
Yet again he won the season, But then choked without a reason
And theres Cougars who was nothing but a wreck.

Oh but, Tell me about Ribosomes?
He landed 5th place with  no glory of his own.
Oh but, you all lost a chance at football heaven
Yeah, but we’ll try again in 2011

Verse 2
———
But now its time for us to look ahead,
Maybe it’s Jersey Wolfess time to win instead [laughter].
I know it sounds crazy, but maybe he won’t be lazy
Like Warriors taking Eagles all day.

Then there is Tigers Hate Cinnamon
They also might be allergic about how to win.
But not like Soul Crusher, mole musher, coal flusher, pole rusher.

But what about Kid Fresh, our gimpy friend.
Maybe this year he’ll be on the mend?
At the very least I know we’ll see
Him walking in here with a bucket o’ KFC

Oh but, Zie Berserkers, remind me bout him?
When it really matters he still don’t know how to win.
So grab a beer, and get ready to cheer, Cause draft day is here!

Chorus
———
Oh you know it, you feel it
Its time for us to start the Junction Draft
Ohh… you gotta get those running backs.
Oh you know it, you feel it
Oh you know it, you feel itIts time for us to start the Junction Draft
Ohh… it’s like Christmas in August.

Always In My Bones

Always In My Bones

This song goes out to Jeff. He is sick today and I owed him this song for a long time. So here it is. Jeff, I hope it brings a little bit of goodness to your day.

This song also goes out to…

Anyone who as a beard sometimes and sometimes not
Anyone who rearranges things for the sake of rearranging things
Anyone who cuts out coupons
Anyone who is on the final stretch
Anyone who is watching someone on the final stretch
Jesus Christ

The Birds Are Beautiful

This song is dedicated to Andrew and Maria and their child to be.  Also, Chris challenged me to make something “beautiful” so I tried.  You judge.  I’ve also been told that the singing is out of tune, but it likely isn’t going to get any better so go easy on me.  Enjoy.

Over My Head

This song was made months if not a year ago at this point.  It has been living in what I called the “raw” songs that were good ideas, but not really good enough to share.  But recently I started weeding through that stack and realized that this version is on par with the other songs I put on here, so I might as well put it up.  I think it was labeled raw because it took a lot to make… there are at least 3 different hand rhythmed drum beats (through a synthesizer) that are quite challenging.  So I had little motivation to work on the guitar, bass and vocals (the vocals are actually just two ad-libed tracks)… but when listening, it has a charm to it.  Enjoy.

Lonely But Not Alone

Another good one from a set of songs I put together in December. Pretty sad song. But there is always some light around a tragedy. Always some possibility.

Everyone who saw them knew it
They talked about the years they had in store
But packages are not what they’re wrapped in
The sea is much more than the shore

The Reckoning

This one started in India in October. I recorded around Christmas. The balance isn’t great, but I love this song. It immediately became one of my favorite tunes ever.

The Reckoning

Looking over hedgerows
Reading up on gravestones
One by one they slowly pass
Dust to dust and ash to ash

Flies been buzzing round my head
Living like I’m mostly dead
In the dirt I hide my things
As I bind and tie my wings

In the reckoning
When the anthem sing
All of the bells will ring

We Are Dangerous

Ok… so its been a while and all that.  But seriously, this song is silly.  I was in the shower and thought of the guitar riff and immediately the lyrics “We Are Dangerous” came into my head.  For no reason.  But I couldn’t remove them once they were stuck in my head in the song… so I went with it and made this hilarious arena rock + pop girl singers + dangerous lyrics… I hope you get a crack out of it.  Maybe it will be an anthem for some angry teenagers someday.

The Junction Draft 2010

I accidentally published this as Chris first… this is definitely a Jeff song for all you who like my lunacy.

Following up last year’s half-assed attempt… here is a song worthy of the day-of-days.  Enjoy!

The Junction Draft 2010
==============

– Verse 1 –
Welcome Junction Draft 2010
The Year That Cougars Reign May Come To An End
Maybe its Soul Crusher’s time,
to lift the curse from the crime.
Of the immaculate correction,  its like a damn infection.
Like when Quags swallowed that drop at the interstate truck stop.

Or what about commish? The guy who was a fish?
He seemed to like texans, oh yeah and mexicans.
But his team, was in the   cellar,
Along with wolfees, quite far from stellar.
It seems he did not look, when he picked up westbrook.
And his playlist went so wrong, Modest Mouse went on too long.

But you’ve got to credit, to the old man whose legit.
His tag is on the stump, but his team then took a dump.
Ribosomes went two and eleven,
Not good enough for playoff heaven.
If there was only help above like Warrior of Truth and Love.
But the homebrew makes him hazy, cause his drafts are always crazy.

– Chorus –
Oh Oh , Its the Junction Draft
Like a Disease
Pass a Homebrew Please
And Two Running Backs.

Oh Oh , Its the Junction Draft
Like Christmas
But Its August
And the Drinkin’s Fine.

– Verse 2 –
Now don’t forget those damn Quakers, Who gave us all shakers…
Who reached the final gun, with the loss column on one,
But then choked in the playoffs,
Along with ‘Zerkers, who couldn’t takeoff.
From travellin the world, while his head was really swirled.
Skype-in Amsterdam, he’s sure a lucky man.

Noty’s on the run, our time with her was fun.
Theres not too much to say, so we’ll leave the simple way:
Notygal Goobye!
Adios, here’s a toast, now be on your way.
Your replacement selected from men,
His name is none other than Tigers Hate Cinnamon.

Now theres the Luddites, who put up decent fights.
Maybe he could win or he should give his team to Gwyn.
There it is, I said it and can’t take it back.
Help me Kid F resh, which rhymes with Bangladesh
Your teams all seem so near, maybe drink a bit more beer.
And you might just find your way, on this Junction Draft Day!

– Chorus (same as above) -
